Start with your certification route

The route depends on your existing Certificate of Competency, sea service and issuing administration. For a UK certificate, the MCA publishes separate requirements for each level and vessel limitation. Check the current Chief Mate requirements before booking training.

Make your sea service traceable

Prepare a clear record of vessels, tonnage, ranks, dates and watchkeeping responsibilities. Keep supporting discharge records and employer testimonials organised. A recruiter can assess operational suitability, but cannot replace the issuing authority or award a certificate.

Prepare for the responsibility, not just the title

Describe your contribution to cargo operations, deck maintenance, emergency preparation and team supervision. At interview, use specific examples and be clear about the vessel types you know. Discuss training gaps and joining expectations before accepting a contract.

General career guidance. Confirm current requirements with the flag administration, employer and approved training provider.
